Saint Louis University's Sam Aitchison has been named a finalist for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Aitchison, a junior majoring in finance, leadership and human resource management, and Catholic Studies, aspires to pursue an MA in Educational Transformation with hopes of eventually working for the U.S. Department of Education.
The final round of competition is set to take place in March.
The Harry S. Truman Foundation was established in 1975. The Act authorizing the Foundation states its purpose is to "award scholarships to persons who demonstrate outstanding potential for and who plan to pursue a career in public service," as well as to conduct a nationwide competition to select Truman scholars. The first scholarships were awarded during the 1977-78 academic year.
Annually, hundreds of college juniors compete for approximately 60 awards. Candidates are required to have a strong record of public service and submit a policy proposal addressing societal issues.
Each recipient of the Truman Scholarship receives up to $30,000 towards a graduate degree focused on public service, along with leadership training, career counseling, and special internship and fellowship opportunities within the federal government.
Historically, Saint Louis University has had five students receive the Truman Scholarship.
