St. Louis, MO - A local high school student has won the Anato-Bee Northwestern Regional Competition, held for the second consecutive year at Saint Louis University (SLU) on March 8-9, 2025. The event was organized by SLU's Adventures in Medicine and Science (AIMS) program.
The Anato-Bee competition allows high school students across the United States to delve into STEM education with a focus on anatomy, embryology, and histology. This hands-on approach aims to enhance students' understanding of biological sciences while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Laura Jenkins, coordinator of the AIMS program at SLU, stated: “It was an honor to host this event here at SLU, where we place such a strong emphasis on STEM education as a powerful tool for transformation and understanding the critical role STEM plays in driving innovation, solving complex global challenges, and preparing students for future careers in a rapidly evolving world.”
Thirty-six students from various states participated in the competition. The winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship for a summer program in anatomical or clinical sciences of their choice. The runner-up is awarded a $1,500 scholarship. Last year's winner from St. Louis attended the Harvard MEDscience Program.
Since its inception in 1991, AIMS has been dedicated to providing anatomy and science education outreach to middle and high school students as part of SLU's School of Medicine Center for Anatomic Science and Education.
Jenkins further emphasized: “By integrating outreach programs with STEM education, we provide opportunities for students and communities to engage in hands-on learning, foster curiosity, and develop critical skills needed for success in these fields.”
One upcoming initiative is the AIMS Medical and Surgical Procedures Workshop scheduled from June 23 to June 27. This workshop targets high school freshmen through incoming college students aged 15-19. It offers insights into anatomy careers within healthcare through presentations by medical professionals alongside laboratory experiences.
