The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed opposition to a proposed legislative measure, SB 149, which aims to introduce new labeling requirements for food and beverage products in the state. The bill suggests that products should display front-of-package labels disclosing allergens and nutritional information. Additionally, items containing bioengineered substances or natural flavorings would need a label with a QR code or website link for further details. Meat products from animals vaccinated with mRNA-based vaccines would require an "MRNA VACCINATED" label.
The Chamber argues that these requirements exceed national standards and impose significant burdens on businesses. According to the Chamber, SB 149 could lead to increased penalties for employers, higher food prices, and complications in interstate commerce.
Jared Hankinson, director of legislative affairs for the Missouri Chamber, voiced concerns before the Senate Families, Seniors and Health Committee. He stated that business owners are worried about rising compliance costs. "They would like to avoid passing on additional costs to consumers, and they would like to avoid the potential liability they believe this could bring if approved by the legislature," Hankinson said.
