Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has announced the issuance of a notice of intent to serve a cease and desist order against Planned Parenthood facilities in the state. The action aims to stop Planned Parenthood from performing chemically induced abortions without an approved complication plan, as required by Missouri law.
"Missouri law is clear: any facility performing chemical abortions must have an approved complication plan in place to protect women’s health and safety," stated Attorney General Bailey. He emphasized the risk posed by Planned Parenthood's actions, noting that "up to 5% of women who undergo chemical abortions end up in the emergency room."
The move is part of Bailey's effort to enforce consumer protection laws in Missouri, which prevent unfair or deceptive practices that could harm consumers. State regulations mandate that facilities conducting chemical abortions must have a complication plan when the FDA label indicates over 1% of patients might need surgical intervention. According to FDA data, up to 4.6% of women undergoing these procedures require emergency medical care.
"Planned Parenthood has a long history of disregarding the health and safety of Missouri women," Bailey remarked. He criticized recent court decisions that have removed basic licensing requirements for such procedures but affirmed his commitment not to allow Planned Parenthood to "flout the law and put women’s lives at risk."
Planned Parenthood now has two business days to respond before a cease and desist order may be issued, potentially halting their chemically induced abortion services in Missouri.
