Gov. Mike Kehoe presented his first State of the State address on January 28, 2025, focusing on key issues such as public safety, economic development, legal climate reform, and child care. These priorities align closely with those of the business community.

Kara Corches, president and CEO of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry, expressed support for Gov. Kehoe's vision: “We thank Gov. Kehoe for his positive vision for our state. Many of his priorities echo what we hear from business leaders across the state,” she said. Corches highlighted concerns about Missouri’s rising crime rate and emphasized the importance of making Missouri attractive for business investment and improving access to quality child care.

Child care is recognized as an economic issue beyond just a concern for working parents. A report by United WE and the University of Missouri indicates that there are nearly three times more children aged six or under than available child care slots in Missouri.

To address this gap, the Missouri Chamber backs HB 269 and SB 455, sponsored by Rep. Brenda Shields and Sen. Lincoln Hough respectively. These bills propose a tax credit package aimed at increasing child care provider capacity and helping businesses offer child care benefits to retain and recruit employees.

Gov. Kehoe's address also touched on other priorities shared by the Missouri Chamber:

- Enhancing law enforcement training funding to tackle rising crime.

- Promoting economic growth through extending the Deal Closing Fund.

- Investing in rural road improvements to strengthen Missouri’s logistics hub status.

- Implementing tort reform to improve the legal climate.

- Boosting funding for career and technical centers statewide along with career counseling for high school students.

“As we move forward, Missouri’s business community is united and ready to help build a stronger future for our state,” Corches stated.
