The Saint Louis Science Center is bringing back "POMPEII: THE EXHIBITION" due to popular demand, opening May 16, 2025. This exhibition showcases the ancient Roman city buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly two millennia ago. The exhibition includes around 150 authentic artifacts, offering insights into the lives of Pompeii’s inhabitants before the eruption in 79 A.D.
Dr. Ray Vandiver, Science Center President and CEO, stated, “The story of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii is well-recognized around the globe, but the opportunity to connect with the people and the amazing artifacts that have been uncovered from this site like you can in POMPEII: THE EXHIBITION is unparalleled.” He highlighted the exhibition's success when it was first displayed in 2019 and expressed excitement at its return with new updates and artifacts.
The exhibition, located in Boeing Hall, features a wealth of displays, including mosaics, frescoes, jewelry, professional tools, and medical instruments. Some artifacts are making their first tour in the United States, such as a first-century bronze gladiator helmet and a bronze statue of Apollo from 50 A.D.
New elements in the exhibition include a holographic gladiator combat display and a 4-D multimedia simulation of Vesuvius' two-day eruption. Additionally, the exhibition explores Pompeii’s vibrant history as a military hub, commercial port, and resort for Roman nobility.
John Norman, President of NEON’s Artifact Division, said, “The blend of scientific discovery and media-rich retelling of history allows visitors to experience the awe of nature and human ingenuity. We’re thrilled to bring this innovative exhibition back to St. Louis.”
The exhibition is on loan from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples and the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, featuring artifacts illustrating both elite and everyday life in ancient Pompeii. Tickets are required for entry into the exhibition, starting at $15 for Science Center members.
The Saint Louis Science Center offers free admission and is open Thursday through Monday. For tickets and more information, prospective visitors can visit their website or contact the Science Center directly.
