Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway has called for the removal of St. Louis City Sheriff Alfred Montgomery following new federal charges filed against him this week. In a statement, Hanaway said, “A sheriff who is charged with retaliating against witnesses and confined to his home cannot possibly lead a functioning law-enforcement agency. The law demands accountability, and the people of St. Louis deserve leadership worthy of their trust. Our Office has asked the Court to remove Sheriff Montgomery to protect the integrity of law enforcement and restore public confidence.”

Federal prosecutors have brought five new charges against Montgomery: four counts of witness retaliation and one count of witness tampering. These come in addition to an earlier indictment related to an incident in February, when Montgomery allegedly ordered deputies to handcuff Acting Justice Center Commissioner Tammy Ross. As a result of these charges, Montgomery is currently under house arrest with federal monitoring as legal proceedings continue.
