The Saint Louis Science Center's Board of Commissioners has announced that Dr. Ray Vandiver will become the new President and CEO, taking over from Todd Bastean on February 28, 2025. Vandiver brings over 30 years of experience in leading science centers and museums. He joins from the Discovery Lab in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was the founding Executive Director for more than a decade.

Dr. Mark Wrighton, chairman of the Science Center’s Board of Commissioners and chairman of the CEO search committee, expressed enthusiasm about Vandiver's appointment: “We are thrilled to bring an executive of Ray’s stature to the Science Center.” Wrighton highlighted Vandiver's strong leadership skills and extensive knowledge in STEM fields. Notably, Vandiver is returning to his roots in St. Louis, where he was born and raised.

Vandiver will lead a team of nearly 160 members at the Science Center as they work towards fulfilling its mission "to inspire everyone to be curious and engaged in science." He stated, “Leading the Saint Louis Science Center is particularly meaningful to me, as it allows me to return to my hometown – a city that shaped both my personal and professional life.”

Before his role at Discovery Lab, Vandiver served as Vice President of the Center for Learning Experience at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) and was also founding executive director of the Bootheel Youth Museum in Malden, Missouri.

Todd Bastean is retiring after more than five years as President and CEO. Reflecting on his tenure, Bastean said, “I am honored to have served the Science Center and the community in these last five years.”

The Saint Louis Science Center aims to engage visitors with hands-on exhibits and experiences like those found at its OMNIMAX Theater and James S. McDonnell Planetarium.
