U.S. Senator Josh Hawley has criticized Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and FBI Director Christopher Wray for canceling their scheduled public testimony before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The Missouri senator expressed his dissatisfaction in a statement, calling it "a brazen attempt to avoid oversight."
Hawley's remarks come on the heels of an incident involving Jose Ibarra, an illegal immigrant convicted of murdering 22-year-old Laken Riley in Georgia. Ibarra was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole after entering the United States through what Hawley described as "President Biden’s open-border policies" implemented by Mayorkas.
The senator also reiterated his calls for Director Wray's resignation, accusing the FBI under Wray's leadership of being "rife with abuse." He highlighted concerns about the agency targeting parents at school-board meetings both in Missouri and nationwide.
Senator Hawley's criticism reflects ongoing tensions between certain lawmakers and federal agencies over issues related to immigration policy and law enforcement practices.
