U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has filed an amendment to the Senate's current rescissions package, aiming to prevent the Department of Energy from using federal loan guarantees to support the Grain Belt Express project. The project, which is part of broader green energy initiatives, has faced strong opposition from farmers and ranchers in Missouri.
Senator Hawley stated, “The Department of Energy should not be using taxpayer dollars to fund green scams at the expense of Missouri’s farmers and ranchers. The Biden Administration shoved the $4.9 billion federal loan guarantee through at the eleventh hour because they knew it was illegal and immoral. It’s time to defund the Grain Belt Express once and for all.”
Hawley has previously taken steps to oppose funding for the Grain Belt Express and protect landowners in Missouri. Last week, he obtained a commitment from Energy Secretary Chris Wright that the loan guarantees for this project would be rescinded.
