U.S. Senator Josh Hawley has called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate TuSimple Holdings, a Chinese autonomous trucking company, for potential violations related to U.S. export controls and unauthorized technology transfers to China. In a letter addressed to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Senator Hawley expressed concerns about possible breaches of national security by TuSimple.

Senator Hawley highlighted investigative reports indicating that TuSimple shared proprietary data and technologies with entities linked to the Chinese state, allegedly violating a 2022 national security agreement with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). The reports also suggested communications from TuSimple personnel in China regarding shipments of sensitive Nvidia AI chips and ties with Chinese military-affiliated manufacturers.

"If the reports about TuSimple are accurate, they represent not just a violation of export law, but a breach of national trust and a direct threat to American technological leadership," stated Senator Hawley. He emphasized the need for accountability if laws were violated.

The senator urged swift action from the DOJ, questioning whether TuSimple provided protected information to certain Chinese entities and how new companies like Bot Auto are being monitored to prevent similar issues. He also questioned the adequacy of "national security agreements" in managing high-risk companies tied to China's Communist Party.

Senator Hawley's letter calls for an investigation into what activities were covered under TuSimple's national security agreement with CFIUS and details about infractions leading to a $6 million settlement paid by TuSimple.
