Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has introduced new legislation aimed at restricting health insurance coverage for certain procedures involving minors. The proposed Prohibiting Abortion & Transgender Procedures on the Exchanges Act would prevent health plans offered through federal Exchanges from covering abortion services or gender transition procedures and medications for individuals under the age of 18.
“It’s time to ban abortion and gender-transition procedures for minors on the healthcare exchanges. No more loopholes,” said Senator Hawley.
If enacted, the bill would add language similar to the Hyde Amendment directly into the terms of federal health coverage. This would mean that health plans offered on Exchanges could not include abortion coverage, except in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is at risk. Additionally, the bill would prohibit coverage of gender transition procedures or drugs for minors through these plans.
The bill has received support from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
