Two faculty members from Saint Louis University have been honored with Emerson's 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award. The recipients, Jennifer Buehler, Ph.D., from the Education department, and Christina Garcia, Ph.D., from the Spanish department, were recognized for their outstanding contributions to education.
The award celebrates educators in the St. Louis metropolitan area for their leadership, passion for teaching, and contributions to student learning. Buehler has been a part of SLU for 15 years and is known for courses like Living Writing and Young Adult Literature. Her nomination highlighted her ability to engage students beyond typical classroom discussions. "Her classes foster rich, deep, and engaging conversations that go beyond typical classroom discussions," stated her nomination form.
Buehler expressed her dedication to teaching English and education, emphasizing the importance of connecting with students: “Teaching English allows me to help students find books to fall in love with and figure out the story that only they can tell as writers,” she said. She described teaching as both challenging and rewarding: “Every class session contains hundreds of moments of decision-making in response to what I notice in students,” she added.
Garcia has been at SLU for nine years, teaching undergraduate and graduate Spanish classes. She expressed gratitude for being acknowledged among top educators in the region: “It is an incredible feeling to be part of a list of outstanding educators across all levels and across the St. Louis metropolitan area," she remarked.
Garcia was praised for her dedication to students on her nomination form: "She was described as a 'perfect teacher' and someone who 'exemplifies what is best about the SLU faculty.'" Reflecting on her role at SLU, Garcia noted the unique care faculty members provide to their students: "SLU faculty take time to get to know their students and their advice and guidance goes beyond the classroom," she stated.
Both professors shared how their experiences with past mentors influence their teaching approach today. Garcia hopes that her investment in students will inspire them in their future endeavors: "I see myself as paying forward their investment in me," she concluded.
