Yesterday, an incident occurred at the City Justice Center involving several detainees being out of their cells without permission.

"Ensuring the health and safety of everyone at the City Justice Center remains a top priority," said Mayor Tishaura O. Jones. "I want to thank the CJC staff for resolving this incident with the safety of all in mind. As we investigate in order to prevent similar incidents in the future, the administration is in communication with members of the Detention Facilities Oversight Board to ensure transparency and accountability."

Last week, Mayor Jones signed Board Bills 11 & 12, increasing access to CJC for city leaders, attorneys, and members of the Detention Facilities Oversight Board (DFOB). The DFOB, which Mayor Jones established in 2021, has recently sworn in two new members. Their first meeting will be held on September 16th.

On March 23, 2024, Mayor Jones signed Executive Order 79, mandating certain actions by the DFOB and the Oversight Division. In December 2023, Mayor Jones' administration partnered with a new healthcare provider, Physician Correctional USA, to provide medical care at the facility. An additional $2 million in funding and multiple new positions have allowed the Department of Health to provide oversight to ensure that the new provider has greatly increased the level of care provided to detainees at CJC.
