SLU Associate Professor of Internal Medicine Named Society of Hospital Medicine’s ‘Unsung Hero’

St. Louis - Farzana Hoque, M.D., associate professor of internal medicine at Saint Louis University’s School of Medicine, has been selected as the recipient of the Society of Hospital of Medicine’s Unsung Hero award. The recognition, which is only awarded to one individual annually, highlights Hoque's exceptional contributions to the medical community.

Under Hoque’s leadership, she has been instrumental in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within her chapter. Gwendolyn Williams, M.D., president of SHM’s Hampton Roads Chapter, commended Hoque by stating, “The intersectionality of Hoque's diverse lived experiences enriches her initiatives and interactions within the medical community.” Despite facing hardships, Hoque has remained dedicated to her calling in medicine, demonstrating grace in challenging circumstances.

Born in Bangladesh, Hoque completed her doctorate at Dhaka University before moving to the United States for her residency at St. Luke’s. She later joined SLU in 2018, where she currently serves as the acting internship co-director. Additionally, she holds the position of Medical Director of Bordley Tower at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital and is an active member of the Faculty Senate.

In addition to her professional responsibilities, Hoque is deeply committed to giving back to the community. She volunteers at St. Louis CRUSH, an organization dedicated to combating the heroin crisis in the area, and participates in various initiatives aimed at inspiring future physicians. Tejas Sangoi, M.D., treasurer of SHM's St. Louis Chapter, praised Hoque for her humility and kindness, noting that she treats everyone on her team equally and is always open to self-education.

Hoque's dedication to her patients, students, and colleagues has not gone unnoticed. Her innovative approach to leadership and unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion make her a deserving recipient of the Unsung Hero award from the Society of Hospital Medicine.
