U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has announced he will officially challenge the Electoral College vote.
“Millions of voters concerned about election integrity deserve to be heard. I will object on January 6 on their behalf,” Hawley tweeted.
The move comes against the warnings of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
U.S. Sen.-elect Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) previously indicated he was considering a challenge to the vote. In contrast, Hawley is the first U.S. senator to announce a formal challenge to the vote certification.
U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) has taken the lead in challenging the Electoral College vote in the House.
The vote is set to be certified Jan. 6.
Hawley is the junior senator from Missouri. He took over the seat after defeating longtime incumbent Claire McCaskill in 2019.
