Governor Mike Kehoe has announced new measures to provide food assistance for Missourians at risk of losing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in November, due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

SNAP benefits are entirely funded by the federal government and delivered through Electronic Benefit Transfer cards. The state cannot use its own funds to replace these benefits. The Missouri Department of Social Services is prepared to issue SNAP payments as soon as federal operations resume.

“Democrats in Washington continue to hold the federal government hostage for political leverage, leaving Missouri's most vulnerable uncertain if they will have food on the table next month,” said Governor Kehoe. “While the State of Missouri cannot fully replace federal SNAP benefits for those who rely on them, we are working to expedite additional funding sources to assist Missouri's senior population and food banks.”

Governor Kehoe has authorized a $10.6 million transfer from the Senior Services Growth and Development Fund to Area Agencies on Aging across Missouri. This funding is intended to help provide meals for seniors during the shutdown period.

In addition, $5 million from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds will be distributed early to Missouri food banks. This allocation, which typically occurs later in the year, is being advanced due to increased need following reduced SNAP support.

Residents seeking assistance or wishing to contribute can connect with Feeding Missouri, a coalition that coordinates hunger relief efforts statewide.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), also federally funded but administered by the state Department of Health and Senior Services, will continue offering benefits into November. WIC recipients are advised to keep attending appointments and using their WIC cards as usual while program officials monitor daily funding availability. Any changes or interruptions will be communicated through wic.mo.gov if necessary.
