U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt has issued a statement on the first anniversary of the attempted assassination of President Donald J. Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. The incident, which took place one year ago, saw an armed individual attempt to take the life of the then-former president. Trump survived the attack and continued his public activities.

In his statement, Schmitt said: “One year ago today, the nation watched in horror as a deranged gunman attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump. On that day, President Trump survived only by the grace of God and our nation stood at the precipice of a catastrophic event that would’ve altered the course of history. Yet, in the face of unimaginable adversity, President Trump stood unbroken and unbowed, fist raised, face bloodied, promising to continue to ‘fight, fight, fight’ to restore America’s greatness – a promise he is fulfilling in his second term. God bless President Trump and God bless the United States of America."

Schmitt also paid tribute to Corey Comperatore, who was killed during the incident while protecting his family. “Today, we also remember and honor the life of Corey Comperatore, a devoted veteran and firefighter who did not hesitate to give his life protecting his family. May his courage and sacrifice never be forgotten,” Schmitt concluded.

Senator Schmitt announced plans to introduce a resolution marking this anniversary. The resolution will condemn attempts against President Trump's life as well as violence targeting elected officials more broadly and will honor victims of political violence.
