Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has announced that a multistate coalition, including Missouri, has secured privacy protections for consumers following the approved sale of 23andMe to a nonprofit medical research organization. This development comes after concerns were raised about the potential misuse of consumer genetic data during 23andMe's bankruptcy proceedings.

"I am proud Missouri helped lead the charge to prevent 23andMe from auctioning off Missourians’ private genetic data to the highest bidder," said Attorney General Bailey. "Thanks to our efforts, this sale is now subject to strong privacy protections that will safeguard consumer information and ensure accountability going forward."

The Eastern District of Missouri Bankruptcy Court approved the $305 million sale on June 27, 2025. The buyer is TTAM Research Institute, a newly formed entity created by Anne Wojcicki, founder and former CEO of 23andMe. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2023 following a cybersecurity breach and financial challenges.

As part of the agreement, several conditions have been imposed to protect consumer data. These include maintaining current privacy policies with enhanced cybersecurity protocols, allowing consumers to permanently delete their data at any time with oversight from Missouri's Consumer Protection Team, and ensuring no future resale without full privacy compliance.

TTAM is also prohibited from sharing customer data with foreign adversaries as defined by federal law. Additionally, a Consumer Privacy Advisory Board will be established to oversee these measures.

The sale includes benefits for Missouri residents such as funding claims for victims of the 2023 data breach and continued support for scientific research through TTAM’s nonprofit status. The leadership team remains unchanged, promising stability in service.

"Our office will continue to monitor this transition closely," added Attorney General Bailey. "That includes enforcement of consumers’ rights to delete their data and ongoing compliance with Missouri’s consumer protection laws."

Consumers will be notified directly about the ownership change and provided instructions on how to delete their data permanently.
