As the Fourth of July nears, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is emphasizing safety during fireworks celebrations. Fireworks sales are legal in Missouri from June 20 through July 10, and Bailey is urging residents to prioritize safety.
“Our top priority is keeping Missouri families safe,” said Attorney General Bailey. “Fireworks are a cherished tradition, but they must be handled with care. A few simple precautions can prevent disaster and keep the focus on celebrating our nation’s freedom.”
The Attorney General's Office has provided several safety tips to ensure a safe holiday season:
General firework safety tips include never allowing children to handle or ignite fireworks, avoiding the use of fireworks under the influence of alcohol or drugs, maintaining a safe distance during use, not attempting to relight malfunctioning fireworks, and soaking used or malfunctioning fireworks in water before disposal.
Before lighting fireworks, residents should buy legal products from licensed retailers and avoid illegal or homemade devices. It is important to choose a clear outdoor area away from people, buildings, vehicles, dry grass, and flammable materials. Having water nearby—such as a bucket of water, garden hose, or fire extinguisher—is advised. Instructions should always be read carefully. Checking local ordinances for restrictions near schools, churches, or hospitals is recommended. Additionally, pets should be kept indoors with ID tags in case they become frightened.
During displays, only one firework should be lit at a time while moving away quickly afterward. Protective eyewear is recommended for those handling fireworks. Spectators should remain at least 50 feet away from the lighting area. Holding lighted fireworks in hand—including sparklers—is discouraged; leaning over them while lighting is also unsafe. If a firework fails to go off after lighting it once more isn’t advisable; instead wait 20 minutes then soak it before disposing properly.
After displays conclude soaking all used—and unused—fireworks prior disposal ensures safety measures are upheld along with proper disposal methods being followed regarding duds too by soaking them first then discarding safely afterward.
The Attorney General’s Office encourages Missourians to stay alert by following these guidelines making responsible choices ensuring an injury-free joyful celebration this Independence Day.
