Today, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley expressed approval for the recent announcement made by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding the expedited cleanup of St. Louis’ West Lake Landfill. The plan, set to be completed two years ahead of the original schedule, was announced by EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. This announcement follows a visit by Senator Hawley and Administrator Zeldin to West Lake Landfill and Coldwater Creek last month, where they observed the effects of radioactive waste.
The EPA's report addresses the longstanding issues faced by residents due to the illegal dumping of radioactive waste by the federal government many years ago. Administrator Zeldin emphasized the importance of addressing this situation in a timely and effective manner.
“Meeting and speaking with the St. Louis community members who have long endured radioactive waste in their community was beyond moving. This moment requires an unprecedented effort to clean up the West Lake Landfill and impacted sites in the area. I look forward to partnering with Senator Josh Hawley to achieve remarkable and urgent progress,” stated Administrator Zeldin.
