A recent poll conducted by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) indicates a strong consensus among Americans in support of small businesses and the 20% Small Business Tax Deduction. The survey highlights the public's bipartisan agreement on the necessity of federal support for small enterprises, with 83% of respondents emphasizing its importance.
Brad Jones, the Missouri State Director for NFIB, remarked, “The 20% Small Business Deduction has allowed Missouri small business owners to invest in their employees and businesses – which is why it’s so important that Congress makes it permanent. Americans and small business owners alike recognize the value of this deduction and are concerned about the devastating consequences if Congress fails to act. NFIB strongly urges Congress to make the deduction permanent and deliver the certainty that small businesses need to continue to grow, hire, and give back to their communities.”
The poll reveals that 93% of Americans agree that making the deduction permanent should be a priority for Congress. Furthermore, 95% are concerned about the potential negative impact if the deduction were to expire.
More than half of the respondents expressed a high level of concern regarding the economic implications should the deduction be discontinued. The deduction was initially introduced as part of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) but is set to expire by the end of 2025 unless Congress acts.
The NFIB-commissioned poll, handled by Seven Letter Insight, was conducted between March 21 and March 25, 2025. The survey comprised 2000 online respondents, including an oversample of 500 small business owners, and claims a margin of error of +/-2.0%.
