U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, Chair of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, has invited Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify under oath following serious allegations made by former Facebook employee Sarah Wynn-Williams. During a subcommittee hearing, Wynn-Williams accused Meta of colluding with the Chinese Communist Party, mishandling artificial intelligence, and providing false information to Congress.
Senator Hawley emphasized the importance of addressing these allegations publicly, stating, "The public deserves to hear your response to these serious allegations, particularly since they pertain to American national security."
In his letter to Zuckerberg, Hawley detailed several assertions made by Wynn-Williams. She claims that Meta briefed Chinese officials on AI technology, potentially benefitting Chinese military efforts. Wynn-Williams also alleged that Meta handed over user data to the Chinese Communist Party and considered deploying PoP servers in China. Additionally, she stated that Meta censored a Chinese dissident and misled Congress regarding this action. Lastly, Wynn-Williams revealed Meta's development of a censorship tool for posts in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
To address these concerns, Senator Hawley has requested Zuckerberg's testimony at an upcoming Senate Committee on the Judiciary hearing titled “A Time for Truth, Part II: Oversight of Meta’s Foreign Relations and Representations to the United States Congress.” Hawley concluded the letter stating, "We look forward to hearing the truth."
