U.S. Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri addressed the Senate, advocating for changes to the Child Tax Credit (CTC) aimed at providing more support to American families. He highlighted the importance of these reforms in strengthening families and aiding working individuals.
"The test of this Congress will be whether we strengthen America’s families and whether we deliver for America’s working people," stated Senator Hawley. "Because in those families lies the hope of this nation, and in those working people resides the wellspring of our great national strength."
Senator Hawley criticized the current economic conditions, describing them as "fundamentally wrong" when they prevent working individuals from affording children or supporting their offspring through their labor.
His proposal seeks to increase the CTC from $2,000 per child to $5,000 per child. It would also extend its application to payroll taxes and allow parents to receive installments throughout the year instead of a lump sum during tax season.
Previously, Senator Hawley was among three Senate Republicans who supported a bipartisan tax package that featured an expanded CTC.
