Dr. Edward J. Feser has been appointed as the 34th president of Saint Louis University (SLU), effective following an extensive national search conducted by a committee of SLU trustees, faculty, staff, students, and members of the Society of Jesus. The announcement was made after the University's Board of Trustees approved his appointment during their December 6 meeting.
Feser currently holds the position of provost and executive vice president at Oregon State University (OSU). He expressed enthusiasm about his new role at SLU: “Saint Louis University is a remarkable institution with an impressive history of impact, and it will be both exciting and a privilege to lead it,” he said. “I am thrilled at the prospect of joining the SLU community and contributing to the University’s outstanding legacy.”
Eric Engler, chair of SLU’s Board of Trustees, highlighted Feser's dedication to education: “Dr. Feser’s leadership journey has been defined by a steadfast belief in the power of education to transform lives and contribute to flourishing communities.” Engler further emphasized Feser's alignment with Jesuit values and his potential to enhance SLU's mission-focused trajectory.
Feser's tenure at OSU was marked by several initiatives including strategic planning for student success, promoting interdisciplinary research through a $213 million Collaborative Innovation Complex, advancing diversity in student enrollment, and implementing budgetary innovations for financial stability.
Thomas P. Greene, S.J., provincial superior of the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province praised Feser's qualifications: “I am deeply grateful to Dr. Feser for his willingness to serve in such an important role. His experience as a scholar and administrator makes him uniquely qualified.”
Joseph Conran, SLU trustee and chair of the search committee expressed confidence in Feser's ability: “Dr. Feser is a visionary leader whose formidable experience aligns with Saint Louis University’s current strengths.”
Feser will succeed Fred P. Pestello who announced plans to step down from the presidency at the end of June 2025 after over ten years marked by significant growth in student enrollment, fundraising, and research activities.
Reflecting on Pestello's leadership, Feser stated: "President Pestello’s vision and outstanding leadership are evident in the success... I’m excited to work with the SLU community."
Pestello commented on SLU's future under new leadership: “Because of contributions from countless SLU community members... Dr. Feser has knowledge...to create new possibilities for a thriving future.”
