Saloni Shringarpure, a senior at the School of Science and Engineering majoring in biomedical engineering, has demonstrated a strong commitment to medicine. Since her sophomore year, she has volunteered at the Hindu Temple of St. Louis health clinic and is a certified emergency medical technician (EMT), providing healthcare to her community.
Shringarpure shared her early interest in biomedical engineering, stating, "I wanted to be a biomedical engineer before I knew I wanted to be in medicine. The integration of science, medicine, mathematics and engineering really drew me in." She discovered her passion for medicine during high school through shadowing doctors, which led her to focus more on this field.
Her involvement with the Hindu Temple of St. Louis health clinic began when she noticed the clinic during temple visits and felt compelled to join. "It's just really fun to work with patients one-on-one," she said. Her pursuit of clinical experience extended to earning an EMT certification, allowing her to gain diverse medical training.
Reflecting on her academic journey, Shringarpure highlighted her senior capstone project as a significant achievement. Her team designed an intermittent pneumatic compression device for lymphedema patients, adapting existing technology used post-surgery for blood clot prevention. Despite limited experience in building new devices and coding, they successfully utilized campus resources for their project.
Looking ahead, Shringarpure plans to attend medical school but will take a gap year first. She intends to gain further clinical experience and spend time with friends while also traveling.
