The Grand Center Arts District recently recognized the leadership and contributions of Saint Louis University's president and inaugural presidential spouse at its 2024 gala, "A Grand Celebration," held on September 20. The couple was awarded the Excellence in Community Leadership Award.

Fran Pestello was acknowledged for her significant role in promoting the St. Louis Literary Award at Saint Louis University, a notable literary prize in the United States. Her efforts to engage the community with literary works through various programs were highlighted. She expressed her satisfaction, stating, “It has been incredibly rewarding to contribute to the flourishing arts scene through the support of the St. Louis Literary Awards, which is just one example of the world-class creative programming that happens right here in our neighborhood.”

Fred Pestello's achievements included enhancing SLU’s commitment to diversity, equity, and community engagement while leading initiatives for Midtown St. Louis's revitalization. Reflecting on their journey since joining SLU a decade ago, he remarked, “When Fran and I arrived at SLU 10 years ago, it was clear to me how important it would be to build the University’s relationships with our neighbors in St. Louis and to invest in the neighborhoods surrounding our campuses,” adding that “Grand Center has been an incredible leader and partner in this work.”

Joseph Conran ('67, '70), former chairman of SLU’s Board of Trustees, praised their dedication: “During their tenure at SLU, I have seen how the Pestellos have committed themselves to be partners in the St. Louis community and to be good neighbors to the Grand Center Arts District,” he said. He further noted his pleasure at seeing them honored for their commitment.

Additionally honored during the event was Donald Suggs, D.D.S., a longtime board member of Grand Center who received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his extensive contributions as a doctor, publisher, entrepreneur, community leader and advocate for African Americans and African American artists.
