A groundbreaking ceremony took place at the Fisher Delta Research, Extension and Education Center (FD-REEC) in Portageville, Missouri, marking the beginning of a new chapter for agriculture research in the region. The event celebrated the construction of the Roy Blunt Soil Testing and Research Laboratory, a $4.6 million facility aimed at enhancing research programs related to soil, water, and plant-tissue testing.

Former Senator Roy Blunt, a prominent figure in Missouri agriculture, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to have a facility named after him, stating, “It is an honor to have my name connected with this world-class facility right in the heart of the region that will benefit from the research the most.” Blunt's dedication to agriculture was highlighted by Keith Holloway, a member of the University of Missouri Board of Curators, who acknowledged Blunt's advocacy for agriculture research throughout his career.

The new laboratory, to be housed at FD-REEC, is expected to provide cutting-edge technologies and research-based recommendations directly to Missouri farmers. University of Missouri President Mun Choi emphasized the importance of the facility, noting that it will serve as a testament to Senator Blunt's support for Missouri agriculture.

Christopher R. Daubert, vice chancellor and dean of the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, highlighted the significance of the laboratory in enhancing research quality at the center and ultimately benefiting Missouri farmers. Chad Higgins, vice chancellor for extension, emphasized the critical role of the MU Extension's Soil Testing Program in supporting farmers with essential insights into soil health and nutrient management.

The collaboration between federal, state, and local funding sources, spearheaded by former Senator Blunt, was crucial in bringing the project to fruition. Jason Bean, Missouri senator representing District 25, commended Blunt for his efforts in securing funding that will enhance educational programs and research for the agricultural community.

The Roy Blunt Soil Testing and Research Laboratory is set to offer technologically advanced testing services currently unavailable in the region, including soil sample analysis and water and plant-tissue testing. The facility will also support research programs on rice production and entomology, as well as greenhouse operations.

Construction on the 6,200-square-foot building is scheduled to commence in the spring, marking a significant milestone in advancing agriculture research in Missouri. The new laboratory is poised to play a vital role in supporting farmers, improving crop yields, and contributing to the overall success of the agricultural industry in the region.
