University of Missouri Extension will host a series of free online trainings on May 11 to highlight the importance of child care for families, employers, and communities.

The topic is significant because Missouri loses an estimated $1.14 billion each year due to shortages in child care. When parents cannot rely on consistent child care, they may miss work, which can lead to financial consequences for businesses. Sarah Kennedy, a community development specialist with University of Missouri Extension, said these issues affect both the workforce and the broader economy.

“Child care is a complex issue that will require complex solutions,” Kennedy said. “These trainings are a first step to understanding the issues at hand and how businesses can get involved in becoming part of the solution.”

The scheduled sessions include “Early Child Care Supports Thriving Businesses” from 8:30-10 a.m., which will address how early child care impacts business operations and economic opportunity; “Understanding Policies That Support Families in the Workplace” from noon-1:30 p.m., focusing on workplace policies that help recruit and retain employees; and “Understanding Collective Early Child Care Work in Your Community” from 6:30-8 p.m., discussing local coalitions such as Community Leaders groups, Child Care Collaborative Networks, Kids Win Missouri, and Missouri Community Action Networks.

Each training session qualifies for 1.5 clock hours under the Missouri Professional Development System if needed. For more information about these events or how to participate locally, individuals are encouraged to contact Sarah Kennedy at skennedy@missouri.edu.
