The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team swept Lewis University on April 19 at the UMSL Softball Field, winning by scores of 13-2 in five innings and 7-4. The victories ended a six-game losing streak against the Flyers, with the Tritons improving their record to 21-19 overall and 14-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The wins are significant for UMSL as they reverse a recent trend of losses against Lewis and boost the team’s standing within their conference. Both games featured strong offensive performances from several Tritons players.
In game one, Gracie Philpot hit a three-run home run to give UMSL an early lead after Lewis opened with a solo home run by Katie Jensen. The Tritons continued their momentum with a six-run third inning highlighted by key hits from May Pasqualini and Kaytie Kossina. Ashley Ware earned her sixth win of the season, allowing just two runs over five innings.
Game two saw UMSL take an early lead again, building up to a seven-run advantage before holding off a late rally from Lewis in the final innings. Kiley Sullivan led with three runs batted in while Jayla Plotz recorded her first collegiate win as pitcher.
UMSL concludes its current homestand on Tuesday, April 21, facing Central Missouri in a nonconference doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m. at the UMSL Softball Field.
The sweep marks an important turnaround for UMSL’s season as they prepare for upcoming games that could further impact their postseason opportunities.
