U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) announced that the Department of Energy has canceled a $5 billion federal loan guarantee for the Grain Belt Express, a transmission project that would have crossed eight counties in Missouri. The decision follows Hawley's request to halt funding for the project, which he criticized for taking land from Missouri farmers and benefiting Invenergy, its parent company.

"The Grain Belt Express boondoggle loan has been CANCELLED," said Senator Hawley on July 23, 2025.

The Department of Energy's action comes after Secretary Chris Wright pledged to stop the project. Hawley had previously sent letters to the department in March and June urging cancellation of the loan. According to Hawley, he has worked for years to prevent federal confiscation of Missourians’ property and plans to continue these efforts.
