The recent summit held at Tegeler Hall focused on Belize2020, an initiative aimed at improving Belize through support for Jesuit ministries. The event was organized by Saint Louis University's School of Education and the Herrmann Center for Innovative Catholic Education.

Dr. Bryan Sokol, an associate professor at SLU and one of the organizers, noted the importance of maintaining a sense of connection among participants. "Belize2020 is built on love," he stated. Dr. Michael Boyle, Executive Director of the Herrmann Center, led attendees in prayer to commence the three-day summit.

Belize2020's initial focus was education, with participation from educators, Jesuit partners, lay leaders, and community members. Celia Usher, a superintendent managing Catholic schools in Belize, highlighted the genuine care and commitment of those involved: “We don't always work with people who genuinely care about you... [Belize] 2020 is made up of people who bring their hearts.”

Roxanna Encalada from St. Martin de Porres primary school expressed her joy over the collaboration within Belize2020: “It feels special and it feels beautiful... to share love with the world.”

The initiative began in 2014 to tackle issues such as drug violence and unemployment in Belize. Over 50 attendees included representatives from various institutions like Saint Louis University and St. John’s College in Belize.

Sessions during the summit reviewed past successes and set goals for future endeavors. Dr. Sokol mentioned that they were working on a memorandum of understanding to formalize relationships within the organization.

Organizers plan to compile notes from the summit to ensure continuity for future network members. The Herrmann Center will coordinate future retreats for Belize2020 as part of ongoing efforts.
