July 21, 2025 4:48 pm JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey announced the resignation of Benton County Treasurer Richard Renno. This development follows the filing of a petition for writ of quo warranto by the Attorney General seeking Renno's immediate and permanent removal from office.
“This resignation is a win for the people of Benton County and a step toward restoring public trust,” said Attorney General Bailey. “When public officials violate the law and abandon their duties, I will act decisively to protect Missouri families.”
The petition from Attorney General Bailey included serious allegations against Renno, such as his arrest on felony sex charges involving a minor, misuse of taxpayer time for predatory behavior, and failure to perform statutory duties as the sole employee in the Treasurer’s Office.
Historically, quo warranto actions by the Attorney General’s Office have seldom needed a final court order for removal due to clear evidence of misconduct. Under Bailey's leadership, officials like St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner and Mississippi County Sheriff resigned rather than face legal proceedings over alleged misconduct or abandonment of duty. Similarly, Renno's resignation reflects this trend where officials confronted with strong evidence opt to resign.
“As history shows, corrupt officials faced with overwhelming evidence often choose to resign rather than face removal. That’s exactly what happened here,” concluded Attorney General Bailey.
The Attorney General’s Office is committed to using all legal means to address misconduct in public office and maintain the rule of law in Missouri.
Attorney General Bailey reminds that charges against Renno are allegations and that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
