Zach, a father of three from Branson, Missouri, lost both legs in a workplace accident in 2019. After years of struggle with prosthetics, he underwent osseointegration surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. This innovative procedure allows the prosthesis to be implanted directly into the bone.
Recalling his life before the accident, Zach said, “I worked hard to take care of my boys.” His life changed on September 5, 2019, when an accident at a charcoal factory resulted in the amputation of both his legs.
Zach spent months in recovery and endured numerous surgeries. During this challenging period, he found inspiration in his sons. After leaving the hospital, Zach encountered difficulties with daily tasks until an unexpected introduction to sled hockey rekindled his spirit. He joined a team and found joy in sports once again.
Despite trying multiple prosthetics without success, Zach's prospects improved after learning about osseointegration from Ian English, MD. Dr. English explained the procedure's benefits: “Dr. English was very informative about the osseointegration process,” Zach said.
The surgical process began in November 2023 under Dr. English and Christopher McAndrew, MD. The two-stage procedure involved implanting a device into Zach’s femur and later attaching it to a prosthetic limb.
Now undergoing rehabilitation, Zach is optimistic about walking again and hopes to compete in Paralympic hockey someday. He continues to adapt alongside his sons as they embrace their new normal together.
When asked what excites him most post-surgery, Zach stated simply: “Walking. That’s what I want to do.”
