BJC Health System has announced the retirement of CEO Rich Liekweg, effective October 1, 2025. Liekweg's career in healthcare spans nearly four decades, with the last 16 years dedicated to BJC Health System based in St. Louis.
“It has been an honor to serve and lead our team members these past 16 years as they deliver exceptional care to our patients and communities,” said Liekweg. “Together, we successfully navigated through unprecedented times in the industry, never losing sight of our singular purpose to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve."
Following a thorough succession planning process, Nick Barto, who currently serves as president of BJC Health System, will assume the role of president and CEO on October 1.
Dustin Allison, Interim CEO of Greater St. Louis, Inc., issued a statement regarding Liekweg's retirement: “Our congratulations to Rich Liekweg on the culmination of a 40-year career signified by leadership, dedication, and action to improve the lives of others."
Allison further noted that under Liekweg’s leadership, BJC Health System became one of the leading health systems in the country and a major economic driver in St. Louis. During his tenure, Liekweg also played a key role in forming the St. Louis Regional Pandemic Task Force.
“As a member of the Greater St. Louis, Inc. Board of Directors," Allison added, "Rich has used his voice to help drive inclusive growth and advance collaboration across the region.”
While acknowledging that Liekweg's leadership will be missed, Allison expressed excitement for him as he embarks on this new chapter.
