Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has issued a demand for the immediate resignation of St. Louis Sheriff Alfred Montgomery, citing misconduct and instability in his leadership. If Montgomery does not resign by noon on June 25, he will face removal proceedings through a writ of quo warranto.
Attorney General Bailey emphasized his commitment to upholding the rule of law, stating, “Sheriff Alfred Montgomery’s job is to secure the courthouse, protect detainees, and uphold public trust, not abuse taxpayer resources. This level of misconduct and instability demands immediate accountability.”
The allegations against Sheriff Montgomery include financial mismanagement, workplace misconduct and abuse of authority, and failure to perform his duties. These issues have reportedly undermined public trust in law enforcement within St. Louis.
Bailey's office has set up a public tip line for individuals to provide additional information about the sheriff's alleged misconduct at STLcorruption@ago.mo.gov.
Under Missouri law, a writ of quo warranto allows the Attorney General to remove an official who has unlawfully held office or neglected their duties. The action aims to protect the public and maintain integrity in public service.
Quo warranto has been used historically in Missouri for similar purposes, including the notable case involving Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner.
“We relentlessly pursue any public official who violates the law. This office has a zero-tolerance policy on public corruption,” concluded Attorney General Bailey.
