U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, alongside other members of the Missouri Delegation, has formally requested President Donald Trump to issue a federal disaster declaration following severe storms and tornadoes that struck Missouri on April 29, 2025. The delegation's letter supports Governor Mike Kehoe's request made on May 19, which seeks federal funds and assistance for recovery efforts.
"This declaration is vital to providing the resources, technical support, and federal assistance necessary for these communities to repair public infrastructure, address recovery needs, and begin rebuilding after this devastating weather event," stated the lawmakers in their letter.
The storms affected six counties: Barry, Greene, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, and Washington. Joint assessments by FEMA and other agencies estimate over $16.5 million in damages to public infrastructure. The requested disaster declaration would enable local governments and nonprofits to seek federal reimbursement for emergency response costs.
"We respectfully urge your immediate consideration and approval of this request. Missourians are resilient and committed to rebuilding, and federal assistance will be a crucial part of helping them move forward," concluded the delegation.
Separately, Senator Hawley is advocating for federal aid concerning recent tornadoes in Eastern Missouri. He has urged for a special emergency designation to facilitate federal reimbursement for first responder activities.
