During a U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs hearing, Senator Josh Hawley highlighted issues faced by victims of natural disasters due to insurance company practices. The hearing focused on how these companies allegedly defraud their clients during times of need.

Senator Hawley stated, “This isn’t charity that we’re talking about. [Americans] turn to their insurance companies because they pay premiums to those insurance companies. It’s a contract.” He emphasized the frustration policyholders experience when insurers delay or deny claims after disasters.

Homeowners affected by recent storms and whistleblowers from the insurance industry testified at the hearing. The executive director of the American Policyholder Association also participated, discussing fraud investigations against insurance firms.

A disaster victim shared, “When we needed Allstate the most, they failed us.” Another noted, “It’s about the failure of a system that leaves families vulnerable after catastrophic events.”

Senator Hawley remarked, “It’s not like it’s happened to just one family. It is a deliberate strategy to maximize profits.” He criticized Allstate and State Farm for alleged fraudulent activities and intimidation tactics toward whistleblowers.

“We’ve just heard testimony here–sworn testimony from multiple adjusters–that your company ordered them to delete or alter damage estimates to reduce payouts and to make you profits,” said Senator Hawley. “It sounds to me like you’re running a system of institutionalized fraud.”

The senator has been advocating for victims since President Trump's visit to North Carolina in January, where he addressed similar issues with Hurricane Helene's impact.
