U.S. Senator Josh Hawley has expressed concerns over potential plans by the Defense Health Agency (DHA) to downgrade Fort Leonard Wood's General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital to a clinic. In a letter addressed to Dr. David J. Smith, Acting Director of the DHA, Hawley emphasized the importance of maintaining the hospital's current status.

Hawley stated, "I write with great concern over reports that the Defense Health Agency (DHA) is considering downgrading the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital to a clinic. I urge you to reconsider this and ensure that Fort Leonard Wood keeps its newly built hospital."

He highlighted past attempts by the DHA to downgrade the facility and his previous efforts urging Secretary Austin to reverse such decisions. According to Hawley, "Downgrading this hospital would seriously harm soldiers, their families, and the broader community." He noted that it could affect Fort Leonard Wood's role as a major Army training center.

The senator also pointed out financial implications: "The DHA has previously considered downgrading this hospital as a cost savings measure, but in point of fact such a move would represent the abandonment of over $400 million in recent investments." He added that it would lead to additional costs for servicemembers who would need to travel for services beyond outpatient care.

Hawley concluded his letter with an appeal: "A downgrade of this facility should not happen. I urge you to reconsider and reverse any determinations that have been made to do so."
