U.S. Senator Josh Hawley has taken the lead among Missouri's congressional delegation in backing Governor Mike Kehoe's appeal for a disaster declaration from President Donald Trump. The request follows severe storms that struck southern Missouri between March 30 and April 8, leaving over 50,000 residents without power in Springfield.
The Missouri lawmakers emphasized the importance of the declaration: “This declaration is critical to ensuring Missouri communities receive the immediate resources, technical assistance, and long-term recovery support they need to repair vital infrastructure, assist displaced families, and rebuild communities in the aftermath of these devastating storm,” they stated.
They urged President Trump for prompt action: “We respectfully request your swift action to ensure that these communities receive the necessary support to respond to the disaster.”
Senator Hawley has also joined other Missouri representatives in supporting Governor Kehoe’s earlier request for a disaster declaration due to tornadoes affecting eastern Missouri this year.
Governor Kehoe formally requested a major disaster declaration on April 30, 2025. This request was made under the Stafford Act for public assistance across 25 counties, individual assistance in 20 counties, and hazard mitigation throughout Missouri. The storms caused significant damage and resulted in six confirmed fatalities.
A presidential disaster declaration would enable eligible individuals, families, local governments, and nonprofits to access federal aid for emergency response costs. Such a declaration would provide crucial support for Missourians as they begin rebuilding efforts after these destructive storms.
The letter concluded with an appeal for immediate attention from President Trump: “Along with our fellow Missourians, we appreciate your immediate attention to this request and stand ready to assist.”
