Today, Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, urging the Department of Justice to reconsider its defense of the Biden Administration's policy on mifepristone. The policy allows women to receive the abortion drug with minimal safeguards, and the case is currently under review by a federal district court.
A recent study revealed that over 10% of women using mifepristone experience serious adverse events such as sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, or require emergency room visits within 45 days. This report highlights the need for reestablishing safety measures for women's health.
Senator Hawley expressed concern in his letter about the Justice Department siding with the Biden administration despite new data indicating potential harms from chemical abortions. "While the grounds for dismissal sought are mostly procedural in nature, I am troubled by the fact that the Justice Department has sided with the Biden administration’s position, especially considering new data showing the harms of chemical abortion for women," Hawley wrote. "I urge you to reconsider."
Hawley has also published an op-ed discussing mifepristone's health risks and urged a return to stricter safety regulations.
The states of Missouri, Idaho, and Kansas have intervened in litigation seeking to restore previous safeguards removed by the Biden administration. They argue these protections are necessary due to significant health risks associated with mifepristone use. The study cited indicates adverse event rates much higher than those reported on FDA-approved labels for mifepristone.
The senator criticized what he termed as a mail-order abortion policy implemented by the current administration. He stated this approach poses significant threats to American women's health and called on Attorney General Bondi to reassess her department's stance.
"Thank you for your attention to this matter," concluded Senator Hawley's letter.
