His speech revolved around the theme for this year's Atlas Week, "From Inequality to Justice: Transforming Global Health through Social Change." Dawes encouraged attendees to continue their efforts in advancing health equity.
Dawes praised Saint Louis University for its leadership in social mission and health equity. Reflecting on a previous visit to the university during its bicentennial celebration, he expressed admiration for SLU's commitment to creating a healthy, equitable, and inclusive society.
In his lecture, Dawes highlighted significant milestones in public health, such as the Civil Rights Act and the Affordable Care Act. He explained the effects of policy on public health, citing the expansion of the interstate system as an example that contributed to higher asthma rates for those living near new roads. Dawes emphasized the importance of addressing and rectifying disparities to improve public health.
At the end of his speech, Dawes challenged attendees to commit to dismantling structural racism and advancing health equity. He urged them to utilize their knowledge, voice, and collective power to encourage progress, stating, "We must dissent because America can’t do better, America must do better."
