U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, along with Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall, has introduced a bill aimed at ensuring stable energy rates and a dependable electric grid for states within the Southwestern Power Administration (SWPA) region. This includes Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Senator Hawley highlighted the necessity of this legislation in light of recent natural disasters. "After the devastating tornadoes that left victims without power for days, Missourians deserve consistent and affordable energy," he stated. "This legislation will ensure that every Missourian has access to power they can rely on."

The proposed Southwestern Power Administration Fund Establishment Act seeks to authorize SWPA to operate using a self-funding revolving Treasury fund. The aim is to offer these states a reliable long-term financing source. By doing so, it intends to stabilize customer rates which are currently susceptible to fluctuations due to market demand and weather conditions. Additionally, it would enable SWPA to plan for long-term infrastructure improvements and avoid significant rate increases during extreme or prolonged droughts.

Senator Moran emphasized the importance of stable electricity rates during adverse weather conditions: "It is critical that Kansans have access to reliable electricity at stable rates, especially during extreme and dangerous weather," he said. He added that the legislation would provide necessary funding stability for energy providers.

Senator Marshall also expressed his support by pointing out the benefits for consumers: "Kansans – especially our farmers and ranchers – need reliable and affordable power," he remarked. "Consumers have suffered from high energy costs for too long, and this bill will help deliver stable and affordable power while improving our power grid infrastructure."

Hawley has been an advocate for providing Missourians with reliable American-made energy solutions.
