A delegation from St. Louis is set to participate in the World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit in San Francisco on March 11 and 12, showcasing the region's growing prominence in agri-food technology. This sector merges agriculture, plant science, food security, and geospatial technology to address global challenges.
Emily Lohse-Busch, Executive Director of the 39 North Innovation District, emphasized St. Louis' potential: “St. Louis’ agri-food tech ecosystem has all of the critical elements to be America’s center of agriculture-based innovation, innovation that will meet rapidly changing global needs and feed, build, and fuel the future.”
The delegation aims to highlight several strengths: a vibrant startup ecosystem supported by venture capital and accelerator programs; a dedicated agtech district featuring the world's largest nonprofit plant science institute; proximity to agricultural stakeholders for field testing; expertise in geospatial technologies; and a robust network of research institutions fostering STEM talent.
Chad Zimmerman from BioSTL stated, “Our strategic location, highly skilled and diverse workforce, world-class research institutions, and collaboration with St. Louis’ geospatial ecosystem truly set our region apart as a leader in agri-food tech.”
During the summit, St. Louis leaders will host a panel titled “From Seed to Scale: Driving Agri-food Innovation in the Heartland,” moderated by Lohse-Busch. Panelists include Charlie Bolten (Solis Agrisciences), Larry Page (Lewis & Clark AgriFood), Nick Reinke (HabiTerre), and Tania Seger (Plastomics).
Maggie Kost from Greater St. Louis Inc., remarked on promoting the city as an investment hub: “Everyone at the Summit will learn that St. Louis is a place they can start up, scale up, and stay.”
The STLMade delegation includes ecosystem partners like Arch Grants and BioSTL; major corporations such as Bayer Crop Science; and startups including Aferna and Plastomics.
