In a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri confronted Kevin Rachlin, the Washington director of The Nexus Project. The exchange focused on Rachlin's stance regarding university campuses' handling of antisemitic incidents and his support for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) systems.
Hawley criticized Rachlin for not condemning what he described as universities' lenient approach towards antisemitic actions. "If you come to this country on a student visa, you are here as a guest of the United States for particular purposes," Hawley stated. "If you assault a Jewish student on campus, you ought to be out of here. And we ought to make it clear to people that we are not going to tolerate it," he added, receiving applause from those present.
The senator further questioned Rachlin about DEI officials' comments labeling Israeli and Jewish-American students as colonizers and calling Israel an apartheid state. "Shouldn't we condemn . . . DEI officials for saying 'Israeli students are colonizers,' 'Jewish-American students are colonizers,' 'Israel is an apartheid state?" Hawley asked, emphasizing that such statements were unequivocally wrong.
Rachlin defended DEI programs during the hearing.
