Saint Louis University (SLU) has strengthened its partnership with the University of Mumbai, introducing a 1+1 pathway program that allows students to complete the first year of their master’s degree at the University of Mumbai and the second year at SLU in St. Louis. This fall, chemistry will join cybersecurity and analytics as available master’s programs.

The pathway program, which launched last fall, is notable for being the first articulation agreement between a public university in India and a U.S. university. These agreements facilitate student transitions between institutions while preserving their academic progress.

By collaborating with the University of Mumbai, SLU has connected with one of the largest university systems globally, serving over 700,000 students across numerous campuses and affiliated colleges.

Last month, SLU President Fred P. Pestello traveled to India to meet with leaders from the University of Mumbai and attended their commencement ceremony as the first American guest of honor. He was recognized by Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, governor of Maharashtra and chancellor of Maharashtra State Universities.

“It was a privilege to take part in such a significant event,” Pestello said. “Our growing partnership with the University of Mumbai supports India’s bold educational initiatives while enriching global perspectives at SLU, benefiting both international and U.S. students.”

During his visit, Pestello also engaged with representatives from various U.S. entities including the State Department, Embassy, and Commercial Service.

“These discussions have strengthened our commitment to expanding SLU’s presence in India and enhancing support for our international students,” Pestello stated. “We look forward to building on these relationships and exploring new avenues for collaboration.”

The initial cohort consists of 55 students who are completing their first year in India and will start their studies at SLU this fall. For many participants, this program provides an exceptional blend of academic rigor and cultural exchange.

Student Srishti Srinivasan expressed confidence in the program: “I am confident about the program and am looking forward to completing my second year at SLU,” she said. “This program offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience that promises excellent exposure and growth opportunities in my field.”

Another student, Vrinda Thakur, shared her positive experience: “I’m finding the program interesting and insightful so far," she noted,"with plenty of opportunities to learn and grow."
