The University of Missouri is set to host its annual Chancellor’s Arts Showcase on February 21 at the Missouri Theatre. This event highlights the talents of over 100 students from various disciplines, showcasing their artwork, performances, and designs.
The College of Arts and Science organizes this free event, which is open to the public. Attendees can expect visual arts installations in the Missouri Theatre lobby and nearby Columbia Art League starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by music, drama, and short films performed by Mizzou students and faculty on stage at 7:30 p.m. The showcase will also feature forward-thinking architectural and interior design concepts as well as garments and textiles created with innovative techniques.
A key highlight will be original music by Giovanni Porfirio, a student composer from Sao Paulo, Brazil. He won the 2025 Sinquefield Composition Prize awarded by the Mizzou School of Music and the Mizzou New Music Initiative. Porfirio aims to blend contemporary music with Bossa Nova influences in his composition.
“My intention is to create a fusion of contemporary music and Bossa Nova, a Brazilian genre that incorporates elements of jazz and Samba,” he said. “Additionally, the piece will feature influences of French Impressionism and Spectralism, particularly in the orchestration.”
Another featured artist is Avery Dixon from Columbia, Missouri. A senior art major specializing in ceramics, Dixon will present her work "Burgundy Heart Shaped Medallion," inspired by personal nostalgia.
“I typically coat red earthenware clay with white slip then use sgraffito to carve through the slip to reveal imagery in that rich red color,” Dixon explained about her technique.
Emme Taylor from Ankeny, Iowa will exhibit her design for an assisted living facility in Örkelljunga, Sweden. Her project focuses on creating an inclusive environment for residents while addressing their diverse needs.
“I wanted to help redefine the current stereotype of assisted living facilities by designing an environment that emphasizes individuality,” Taylor stated regarding her approach.
The Chancellor’s Arts Showcase promises an evening filled with creativity and innovation from talented students across different fields.
