Super Bowl Sunday is recognized as a significant food event in the United States, second only to Thanksgiving. This year, factors such as inflation, bird flu, and tariffs are expected to increase the prices of certain popular snacks like deviled eggs and meatballs. However, some items have decreased in price.
Hoa Hoang, a food price expert from the University of Missouri, advises consumers to be strategic when shopping for Super Bowl gatherings. "While most prices remain stable, some key ingredients — like eggs and beef — have seen significant increases," said Hoang. Despite this, there are opportunities for deals as grocery stores may offer promotions.
Chicken wings will see minimal price changes with an increase of less than 1%. Beef prices continue to rise but at a slower rate compared to previous years. Seafood prices have been decreasing, making shrimp more affordable for game day menus.
Cheese prices are on the rise since late 2024; however, packaged cheese dips might not follow this trend due to different supply-demand dynamics. Salsa prices may also increase slightly due to higher tomato costs.
Eggs face a substantial price hike with an estimated surge of nearly 25% due to ongoing bird flu outbreaks affecting farms. Beer and wine prices rose by about 4-5% in December 2024 compared to the previous year, while soda costs have declined since early last year.
With potential tariff impacts looming, Hoang suggests that fans shop early for their favorite Super Bowl foods to avoid further price hikes.
