Tickets for the St. Louis Literary Award ceremony, honoring author Colson Whitehead, will be available for purchase starting February 7 at 10 a.m. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 9 at the Sheldon Concert Hall.
Colson Whitehead, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, will receive the 2025 St. Louis Literary Award. He is known for his novels including "The Intuitionist," "John Henry Days," "Apex Hides the Hurt," "Sag Harbor," "The Underground Railroad," "The Nickel Boys," and "Harlem Shuffle." Additionally, he authored a book of essays titled "The Colossus of New York."
Whitehead graduated from Harvard College and has experience as a reviewer for television, books, and music at the Village Voice. His work "The Underground Railroad" earned him both the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, among others. Another novel, "The Nickel Boys," also won several awards including the Pulitzer Prize.
Whitehead has been recognized as a finalist for various prestigious awards such as the PEN/Hemingway and PEN/Faulkner Awards. He holds fellowships from institutions like MacArthur and Guggenheim Foundations.
In 2018, he was named New York State Author and received the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction in 2020. His teaching career includes positions at several universities such as Columbia University and Princeton University.
Saint Louis University's Libraries present the St. Louis Literary Award annually to honor writers who enhance understanding of human experiences. Past recipients include notable figures like Margaret Atwood and Salman Rushdie.
