U.S. Senator Josh Hawley has introduced new legislation aimed at severing the ties between American artificial intelligence (AI) development and China. This move comes amid rising concerns about China's advancements in AI technology, particularly following the introduction of "DeepSeek," a data-harvesting, low-cost AI model that caused international unease and impacted American tech stocks.
Senator Hawley emphasized the importance of safeguarding U.S. interests in the face of what he perceives as a growing threat from China. "Every dollar and gig of data that flows into Chinese AI are dollars and data that will ultimately be used against the United States," said Senator Hawley. He further stated, "America cannot afford to empower our greatest adversary at the expense of our own strength."
The proposed legislation, known as the Decoupling America’s Artificial Intelligence Capabilities from China Act, outlines several key measures to restrict interactions with Chinese AI initiatives. These include prohibiting the import or export of AI technology to and from China, banning American companies from conducting AI research in collaboration with Chinese entities, and stopping U.S. investments in Chinese AI development.
